DR. LAVONIA SMITH

Dr. Smith is a veteran of the United States Military where she served as a medical support personnel as a Navy Sailor. In addition, she provided clinical care as a register nurse to military members and their families. After completion of her service in the Navy, she continued to provide care but it would be directly related in the educational field. In 2007, she started working for the Navy College Program as the Senior Education Technician. In this role, she provided para-professional educational information, assistance, and training to 10 +Education Services Specialist, Guidance Counselors and Education Technician. In 2009, Dr. Smith was promoted to the Education Services Specialist for the Department of Navy for Navy Recruiting District Ohio. It would be this role where she became a big advocate for promoting and engaging kids and young adults into STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). In 2013, Dr. Smith started her own non-profit business called “DLS Education & STEM Services.”  Her organization provides educational services to local communities, offering tutoring, college planning and testing, GED and Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) preparation tutoring for the military services, Military and Veteran Services, Educational Counseling and STEM project-base activities. She has a Bachelor of Science degree from Norfolk State University in Interdisciplinary Studies, Master of Education degree in Instructional Technology from American Intercontinental University and PhD in Education from Capella University. She is currently teaching for the Columbus City School District in Columbus, Ohio. She is also one of the co-founders for “Future Awesome Camp.”
